About Ambassador
Ambassador is an open-source, Kubernetes-native API gateway and edge proxy built on the Envoy Proxy. Developed by Ambassador Labs (formerly Datawire), Ambassador provides traffic management, load balancing, authentication, rate limiting, and observability for microservices running in Kubernetes clusters. It acts as the entry point for external traffic into Kubernetes, routing requests to appropriate backend services.
Ambassador is used by engineering teams running microservices architectures on Kubernetes who need a self-hosted, programmable API gateway that integrates deeply with Kubernetes primitives via Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs). It supports canary deployments, circuit breaking, and distributed tracing, making it a comprehensive solution for managing service-to-service and client-to-service communication.
