À propos de .rip

.rip est un nouveau domaine générique de premier niveau à double sens, servant à la fois de sigle pour « Rest in Peace » (repose en paix) et d’abréviation d’usage général. Bien qu’initialement associée aux services commémoratifs et funéraires, cette extension a trouvé un usage plus large dans la technologie, « RIP » étant aussi un sigle pour « Routing Information Protocol » dans le domaine des réseaux, ainsi qu’une expression familière sur internet signifiant que quelque chose a pris fin ou a échoué.

Lancée en 2014 et gérée par Mind + Machine Idea Factory, .rip est ouverte à l’enregistrement général. Elle a été adoptée par des sites commémoratifs, des hommages numériques, des entreprises de pompes funèbres et des blogs technologiques. Les multiples connotations de cette extension l’ont rendue populaire dans la culture internet, où elle est souvent utilisée avec humour ou comme commentaire sur des produits, services ou tendances qui ont disparu.
