Une surcouche d’accessibilité s’installe en réponse à quelque chose, et ce quelque chose est généralement d’ordre juridique.

User Accessibility est un widget : une barre d’outils flottante, chargée dans la page en JavaScript, qui propose aux visiteurs des réglages comme un texte plus grand, un contraste renforcé, un curseur agrandi et des animations réduites, sans aucune modification du site sous-jacent. L’adoption est portée moins par les équipes de design que par le risque. Le droit de l’accessibilité est désormais opposable dans suffisamment de juridictions pour que les entreprises, les organismes publics et les boutiques en ligne cherchent une réponse rapide qu’il suffit d’acheter, et une surcouche hébergée est la plus rapide du marché.

La question de savoir si les outils de ce genre tiennent leurs promesses fait débat. Les spécialistes de l’accessibilité font valoir qu’une surcouche se place par-dessus les problèmes de balisage au lieu de les corriger, et que les personnes qui utilisent des technologies d’assistance désactivent souvent ces widgets. Nos données ne tranchent pas ce débat et n’ont pas vocation à le faire.
