About Yahoo! Web Analytics
A tracking tag can outlive the service it reported to. Nothing on a page knows that the endpoint stopped answering, so the markup sits there, calling into nowhere, until somebody rebuilds the template around it.
Yahoo! Web Analytics was Yahoo Inc.'s free measurement product, launched in 2008 under a Proprietary license, and the company retired it long ago. Anything found now is therefore not a running analytics install. A match records a fossil: a page whose head section still carries the call, on a site nobody has edited since the product was current.
As of October 2026 the fingerprint still appears on 3 sites. The number is small, and the interesting part is not its size but what it identifies. A domain carrying a dead Analytics tag is a domain with no working measurement, an old template, a maintenance gap long enough that nobody has opened the source in years, and quite often an owner who no longer knows what is in their own HTML. Abandoned code gets inherited that way, page by page, through redesigns that never quite happened.
The frozen tag is exactly why an enumeration of a discontinued product is worth more than it sounds. A list of these domains works as a proxy for staleness. Security teams use dead third-party references to find properties where maintenance has stopped, since a page still calling a retired service is likely to be calling other retired things too, and an unresolved or lapsed hostname sitting in a script tag is a hijack risk rather than a cosmetic flaw. Agencies use the same signal to find rebuild prospects, because a site frozen this long has a budget conversation waiting inside it. Anyone studying how the web ages uses it as a dating layer.
The caveat matters as much as the count. Detection depends on the markup we actually fetched, so a legacy include buried in a page we did not reach, or one that survives only in a rarely served template, will not appear here. The set is a sample of visible residue rather than a census of it, and the right way to use the file is as a way of finding stale properties at scale, not as a measure of how widely the product was once adopted.
