About papaya CMS
Continuous development since 1999 puts papaya CMS among the content management systems that have outlived several fashions in web publishing. Products of that vintage were built for editorial teams, permission hierarchies and multilingual publishing inside large organisations, at a point when that meant a server-side application running on hardware the organisation itself owned.
The license explains a great deal about how such software spreads. papaya CMS is published under GPL v2, which means anyone can download, install and modify it without ever contacting dimensional GmbH. Ownership of the code and ownership of the customer relationship come apart under that arrangement. An organisation running the software may be a paying support client, or may have installed it years ago and never spoken to a single person at the vendor. Our data cannot separate those two cases, and no honest reading of it should pretend otherwise.
Implementation matters for detection more than it might seem. PHP is the language here, and server-rendered systems of that sort leave their traces in markup conventions, asset paths, cookie names and administrative endpoints rather than in a script loaded from a vendor domain. An integrator who renames directories, strips generator markers or puts the site behind a caching layer erases most of what a crawler could match on. Deployments in government, education and large corporates, which is where a governance-heavy CMS tends to land, are also the ones most likely to be customised past recognition.
As of October 2026 we detect papaya CMS on 3 sites, and the honest interpretation is a floor rather than a measurement of installed base. Self-hosted software behind a corporate reverse proxy is difficult terrain for any crawler, and the count reflects sites that still show recognisable markers, not every organisation that runs the code. We publish the number because a verified floor is useful. We do not publish an estimate on top of it, because an estimate would be a guess wearing a decimal point.
The list works best for questions about a particular kind of buyer. An open source CMS with a company behind it collects institutional users who value governance and long support horizons over novelty, so the detected set is a sample of organisations with editorial workflow requirements and, usually, an in-house or contracted development team. Migration vendors, hosting companies and agencies pitching replatforming work all want exactly those domains. Security researchers want the same list for a different reason, since a shared codebase means shared exposure whenever an advisory lands, and knowing which sites to check first is only possible from a population view. A per-domain lookup confirms one site at a time. The export in our CMS data hands over the whole detected group in one file, along with the other technologies each of those sites runs, and the useful correlations live in that second column rather than in the count.

Domain, DNS, RDAP/WHOIS, the full technology stack, IP & country, PageRank and Harmonic, re-detected and re-exported daily.
How do I find the websites using papaya CMS?
Buy the technology dataset, then download the complete list of domains we detect using papaya CMS, re-exported every day.
What else is in the papaya CMS technology data?
Each row places papaya CMS next to the other technology on the same site, plus DNS, WHOIS, IP, country and ranking.
Can I download just the sites using papaya CMS, or the whole database?
Both. Every site running papaya CMS comes in the Technologies dataset, one downloadable file. Or buy All data for the entire database: technologies plus identity, ranking, DNS and RDAP/WHOIS for every domain, combined in one file. Daily fresh export.
How do I download the list of websites using papaya CMS?
Three steps: (1) grab the free 10,000-row sample to inspect the schema, (2) buy the Technologies dataset, (3) download the full list of every domain we detect running papaya CMS as a JSON Lines file.
