About Oracle Commerce Cloud
Version numbers usually tell you how badly a platform's install base has drifted apart. For Oracle Commerce Cloud they tell you the opposite.
Calendar-style versioning with almost no spread is the fingerprint of a managed service. Tenants do not choose when to upgrade, the vendor upgrades them, and the estate moves together on a published cadence. For a researcher that has a practical consequence, because an integration or an extraction built against the current release will behave the same way across nearly the whole detected population, and a version field that would be a strong segmentation key for self-hosted software carries very little information here.
Commercially, a detection says something larger than which shop software a retailer picked. Oracle Commerce Cloud is a Proprietary platform from Oracle, and buying it is rarely an isolated decision. The platform normally arrives with, or because of, other parts of the same supplier's estate, whether that is the finance system, the customer experience suite, the identity layer or the database underneath. Presence on a domain is therefore a reasonable proxy for a deep commitment to one supplier, which makes the population a useful shortlist for anyone selling into or against that supplier's accounts.
Our earliest year on record for the platform is 2015, well after the on-premise commerce products the same vendor had been selling for years. Buyers of that generation were largely existing customers moving a working store off their own hardware, which is why the detected population leans towards large, established retailers rather than new brands. A few hundred domains in the Ecommerce category means very little as a share of the web and a good deal as a share of enterprise commerce budget.
The limits are the usual ones for hosted commerce, plus one specific to this platform. Storefronts are frequently served from custom front ends and sit behind a CDN, so a live deployment can be invisible to fingerprinting and the count should be treated as a floor. Our record also carries no country or TLD breakdown for the platform, so geographic questions have to be answered from the domains in the export rather than from this summary.
A per-domain check tells you whether one retailer you already had in mind is on the platform. The extract tells you the set, which is what you need to size a migration market, to recruit implementation partners, to find integration customers for a payments or search or tax product, or simply to watch a managed platform's population grow and shrink across successive crawls.
