About nghttpx - HTTP/2 proxy

A reverse proxy enters a site's stack through whoever runs the servers, not whoever owns the domain. nghttpx - HTTP/2 proxy sits in front of application servers, terminating encrypted connections and translating between the newer multiplexed generation of the web protocol and the older text-based one that many backends still speak. The proxy is written in C, published under the MIT licence and dated in our records to 2013, which places its arrival in the period when the multiplexed protocol was moving out of draft and existing servers had not yet caught up.

Detection therefore describes an infrastructure decision rather than a site owner's preference. A match usually means a hosting provider, a content delivery operator or an in-house platform team put the proxy into the request path, and every hostname behind that deployment inherits it. Counts for software of this kind cluster for exactly that reason, because one operator's choice produces many matched hosts at once and the loss of that operator removes all of them together.

Version reporting is what makes a proxy worth tracking rather than merely noting. A spread that narrow usually means the software arrived through packaged builds rather than being compiled per deployment, which in turn says something about patch discipline. A proxy that terminates encrypted traffic is a security boundary, so an operator sitting several releases behind upstream is carrying a materially different risk profile from one that tracks releases as they land.

Neither reading is available from a single lookup, which returns one fact about one host and no sense of whether that host is typical of anything.
