About Glitch

An editor that hosts your project while you are still typing into it was an odd product idea, and Glitch was built around it. Filed under PaaS and aimed at JavaScript applications, it put a running web app on a public URL within moments of a browser tab being opened, with a live preview, a shared editor and a remix button that forked somebody else's work into your own account. Our record names Glitch Inc. as the operator, marks the platform Proprietary, and puts its first public release at 2017.

Hosting fingerprints answer a different question from framework fingerprints. A framework tells you how a site was built. A hosting platform tells you who keeps it online and, in a case like this one, why the site exists at all. Sites served from a remix oriented platform tend to be prototypes, teaching material, conference demos, hackathon leftovers, personal tools and the small utilities somebody writes for one purpose and never revisits. Commercial operations are the exception rather than the rule, which makes the signal useful as a filter in both directions.

The shape of the platform also shapes what our count means. Projects on it normally live on a subdomain the platform hands out, and a domain level index does not enumerate those as separate businesses. A project reaches a list like ours mainly when somebody attached their own domain to it, which is a deliberate act and a sign that the project was meant to outlive the afternoon it was made in. So the population we can see is biased toward the committed end of a platform whose ordinary population is disposable.

As of October 2026 our count for this fingerprint stands at 1. Platforms in this niche also change shape over time, and hosting that once ran free and always on has a way of being narrowed or retired as costs catch up with it, which surfaces in a detection count before it surfaces anywhere else. For a researcher the value of the list is not the total. The value is knowing which domains a maker cared about enough to point at a prototype platform, and which of those later moved somewhere sturdier, because the migration path is the behaviour actually worth studying.
