About EKM
A shop running on EKM rarely says so anywhere a customer would look. The storefront sits on the retailer's own domain, the checkout carries the retailer's branding, and the platform underneath shows up only in markup patterns and asset paths that a crawler has to be taught to recognise. As of October 2026 our index records 4 sites carrying that signature, a count of storefronts whose public pages matched at crawl time rather than a count of accounts the vendor holds.
EKM has sold the platform under a Proprietary licence since 2002, which places it well before the era when starting a shop meant picking a theme and browsing an app store. Hosted platforms of that generation were bought as a whole service, with design, catalogue, payments and support arriving together, by retailers who had no intention of running servers or hiring developers. A shop still trading on one has usually been trading for years and has stayed put through several changes of fashion in ecommerce tooling. Longevity rather than growth is the story this population tells.
For a researcher the presence of the platform on a domain says something fairly precise about the business behind it. The merchant is small or mid-sized, buys software as a managed service, and makes tooling decisions itself instead of routing them through an engineering team. Payment providers, shipping and returns vendors, review widgets and marketplace integrators all sell into exactly that profile, and so do agencies pitching replatforming work to shops whose current setup is a decade or more old. Knowing which retailers sit on a platform of this vintage is a different question from knowing which retailers sell a given product, and it is answered by different data.
A per-domain lookup can only tell you whether one site you already care about is on the platform. A downloadable list inverts the question, handing you the whole detected population at once so it can be filtered, joined against your own records, counted by top level domain or sampled for manual checking. The caveat travels with the file. Fingerprint detection sees what a public page serves, so storefronts behind aggressive caching, heavy theme customisation or a holding page can be missed entirely, and a modest figure for a hosted platform is better read as a floor on visible deployments than as a measurement of the vendor's reach.
