About CMSimple

CMSimple is old enough that its design decisions read as historical evidence. A content management system that keeps page content in a flat file, with no database at all, belongs to an era when a hosting account meant PHP and FTP and very little else. Since 2001 that architecture has barely needed to change, and the sites still running it are a window into how much of the web was built once and then simply left alone.

Flat-file storage has practical consequences for anyone studying this population. There is no database to migrate, no schema to upgrade and no admin infrastructure to keep patched, so a site can survive a decade of neglect and still serve its pages correctly. Flat-file storage also makes those sites hard to move, because migrating away means parsing a bespoke file format rather than exporting tables. Installations therefore persist long after the owner has stopped touching them.

The license explains the shape of the ecosystem. CMSimple is distributed under GPL v3, and the extensions, templates and translations around it come from a volunteer community rather than a company. No vendor holds a customer list, no sales pipeline exists to reconstruct, and the only reliable record of who runs this system is the sites themselves.

Version data is where the technology gets genuinely useful. We have recorded 77 distinct versions in the wild, with 3.2 the release we observe most often. A spread of that size across a codebase this old means the installed base is stratified by the year each site was last touched, not by any coordinated upgrade cycle. Security researchers can use the version field directly. Hosting companies can use it to find accounts running unmaintained PHP code. Agencies can use it to find owners who are due a rebuild and do not know it yet.
