About Boomerang
Real user monitoring measures a page as its visitors experience it rather than as a test rig experiences it, and that difference is why a library of this kind gets shipped inside production pages at all. Boomerang does that job in the browser, timing navigation, resource loading and interaction, then sending the results as a beacon to a collector for aggregation. Our record dates the project to 2010, names JavaScript as its language, attributes maintenance to Akamai Technologies, Inc. and records the licence as BSD-3-Clause, with the canonical home being a public code repository rather than a product page.
An install says something specific about the team behind a site. Somebody there decided that page speed is a tracked metric with an owner, wired a collection endpoint to receive the beacons, and accepted the small cost of running measurement code in front of every visitor. Sites that go to that trouble usually have revenue tied to load time, which is why the pattern turns up in retail, publishing and travel more than in brochure sites.
As of October 2026 we attribute 2 sites. The figure understates the library badly, and the reason sits in the licence recorded above. A permissive open source licence invites engineering teams to bundle the code into their own application build, rename it, minify it and serve it from a first party path, and once that happens the recognisable filename is gone and the beacon goes to an endpoint on the site's own domain. Detection at that point becomes guesswork we decline to publish as fact.
Commercial monitoring products complicate the count in the same direction. Where a paid performance suite embeds this library inside its own agent under vendor branding, the site is running the code without carrying anything our crawler would label with the project name, so those installs land under whichever product name we do recognise. Our count is best understood as sites serving a recognisable public build, and it should be used as a lower bound rather than a measurement.
Even as a lower bound the set has a use no single lookup can match. A performance tooling vendor does not need to know whether one named site uses the library. The interesting question is which populations still self host their monitoring rather than buying a hosted product, how that choice correlates with CDN provider and tag manager, and whether self hosting is being abandoned over time. Answering any of those means holding the whole matched population in one file and joining it against the other columns in the dataset.
