Le Groenland est un vaste territoire autonome au sein du royaume du Danemark, situé entre l’océan Arctique et l’océan Atlantique. C’est la plus grande île du monde, dont la majeure partie du territoire est recouverte d’une calotte glaciaire. La population du Groenland est concentrée dans des localités côtières, Nuuk faisant office de capitale. L’extension nationale .gl représente le Groenland sur internet et est administrée par TELE Greenland A/S, le principal fournisseur de télécommunications du pays.
Au-delà de son usage officiel comme ccTLD du Groenland, .gl a acquis une popularité internationale en tant qu’abréviation de « global », menant à son adoption par des entreprises technologiques, des start-ups et des services numériques en quête de noms de domaine courts et mémorables. Google utilise notamment le domaine goo.gl pour son service de raccourcissement d’URL.
