Acerca de jQuery
jQuery ha sido declarada obsoleta más veces de las que se han publicado la mayoría de las bibliotecas, y en octubre de 2026 la seguimos detectando en 12.622.095 sitios. La distancia entre esas dos afirmaciones es toda la razón por la que merece la pena leer esta página.
Las necrológicas no se equivocaban en el argumento técnico. Los huecos que jQuery vino a tapar, unas API de navegador inconsistentes y unos motores de selectores hostiles, los cerraron hace años los propios navegadores. Nada de lo que se construye hoy la necesita. Pero esa afirmación vale para el trabajo nuevo, y el trabajo nuevo es una fracción pequeña de la web en cualquier momento dado.
Lo que mantiene alta la cifra es todo lo que ya está construido. Ahora mismo vemos 816 versiones distintas en producción, con 3.5.1 como la más común. Las versiones antiguas persisten porque miles de temas, complementos, creadores de páginas y desarrollos puntuales de agencia fijaron una versión en el momento en que se escribieron y nunca se revisaron. Cada uno de ellos es una pequeña decisión que nadie ha vuelto a revisar y, en conjunto, forman una población que cambia mucho más despacio que el discurso que la rodea.
Por eso la mera presencia es aquí casi inútil como señal. Casi todos los sitios de cierta antigüedad la llevan, así que un filtro por presencia devuelve la mayor parte de la web. El corte útil siempre es por versión, porque ahí es donde reside la diferencia que permite actuar. Un sitio que usa una versión anterior a un aviso de seguridad conocido es un cliente potencial materialmente distinto de uno que usa una compilación actual, ya sea en una evaluación de seguridad, en una propuesta de mantenimiento o en un ejercicio de diligencia debida.
Los datos de versión sirven además como estimación de antigüedad. Una biblioteca fijada hace años es un indicador razonable de cuándo se reconstruyó por última vez un sitio de forma significativa, y esa inferencia suele ser más fiable que cualquier cosa que el sitio diga de sí mismo. Combinada con el CMS y el alojamiento que hay debajo, produce una imagen de lo activamente que se mantiene una propiedad, que es la pregunta que hay detrás de buena parte de la investigación comercial.
La distribución se inclina hacia Estados Unidos, donde la detectamos en 4.103.059 sitios, y hacia la zona .com, y ambas cosas siguen el perfil de antigüedad de esos mercados más que ninguna preferencia por la biblioteca en sí.
La exportación de webatla lleva la cadena de versión de cada dominio en el que la detectamos, junto a las demás tecnologías del mismo sitio, en un único fichero reconstruido a diario. Esa estructura existe justo para que el filtro por versión salga barato: no está pagando por consulta para descubrir que la mayoría de las respuestas no interesan, sino filtrando localmente una población completa hasta quedarse con el subconjunto que interesa.
La escala la convierte además en una variable de control útil más que en un objetivo. Como está presente en una muestra transversal tan amplia, filtrar por ella apenas acota nada, lo que permite usarla para comprobar si alguna otra señal de su análisis es real o si solo sigue la antigüedad del sitio. Si una correlación que ha encontrado desaparece al mantener constante esta biblioteca, lo que medía era la antigüedad.
Hay una lectura más de los datos de versión que suele pasarse por alto. Los grupos de sitios fijados exactamente a la misma versión antigua suelen compartir un origen: un tema, un complemento, un creador de páginas o una plantilla de agencia que empaquetó esa versión y la distribuyó por todas partes. Esos grupos solo se descubren agrupando la población completa por versión y mirando después qué más tienen en común sus miembros, una operación en dos pasos sobre un fichero local y no una consulta que alguien ofrezca como servicio.
Se distribuye bajo la licencia MIT por parte de jQuery Foundation, y es pública desde 2006. Nadie ha tenido nunca una lista de quién la usa, porque nunca ha habido nada donde registrarse.
