About RainLoop

A domain answering with RainLoop is showing you a staff door rather than a shopfront. The software is a browser based mail client written in PHP and installed on the operator's own server, where it sits in front of an existing IMAP and SMTP setup so that accounts can be read from a browser without moving them to a hosted provider. Nothing on that hostname is being sold to the public. The operator has simply exposed an internal tool to the public internet so that staff can reach their mail from anywhere.

Self hosted webmail says something specific about the organisation behind a domain. Somebody chose to keep mail on infrastructure they control rather than buy seats from a large mail provider, a decision that small hosting companies, agencies, universities and privacy conscious operators make far more readily than corporate IT departments do. For a researcher mapping who still runs their own mail stack, finding the client on a domain is more informative than reading the mail exchanger record alone, because a webmail front end tells you a human logs in through a browser rather than through a corporate desktop suite.

First released in 2013 and distributed under an Open Source licence, RainLoop is the kind of software that gets installed once and then left alone. Upgrading means shell access and a maintenance window, which is exactly the work nobody schedules on a server whose only job is mail. Across the installations we can read we separate 15 distinct builds, and the build we log most often is 1.17.0. The spread is really an age distribution rather than a feature distribution, and it widened after upstream development slowed and much of the community moved to a maintained fork, leaving original installations frozen at whatever release was current on the day they were deployed.
