About BrowserCMS
Rails content management systems arrived in a cluster and then thinned out, and the ones still answering requests are usually still there because nobody has had a reason to rebuild the site around them. BrowserCMS belongs to that group. The project dates from 2008, is written in Ruby, and is published under GPL v3, which puts it among the early attempts to give editors in-page editing on a Rails stack instead of a separate admin screen.
The technical shape of the thing matters for what a detection means. A CMS of this kind is not a script dropped into a page, it is the application serving the page, so a domain we match to BrowserCMS is running a Ruby application server, a deployment pipeline somebody once set up, and a dependency tree from the year the site was built. The version we see is 3.3.2, the only release string recorded across the whole matched set, and a single frozen version is what an unattended installation looks like from the outside.
Ownership follows from the same reasoning. A copyleft license and a self-hosted application server mean nobody is billing the site owner for this software, so there is no vendor to call and no automatic update arriving overnight. At the same time, a CMS that stopped being fashionable does lose installations year by year, and some of the decline is real rather than an artifact of detection.
For a researcher the interest is concentrated rather than broad. Security teams and agencies both want to know which public sites run unmaintained application frameworks, because the answer predicts unpatched dependencies and a rebuild budget in equal measure. No lookup of a single domain answers either question, because you would have to suspect the answer already in order to know which domain to check. Starting from the technology and downloading the matched set is the direction that works, and the small size of the result is part of what makes it worth having rather than a reason to ignore it.
