About AWS WAF Captcha

We meet AWS WAF Captcha only when a site has already decided that our crawler looks suspicious. Nothing announces the control on a page it lets through, so the detection is itself a measurement of how a site treats automated traffic.

The feature belongs to Amazon Web Services and shipped in 2021 as part of the managed firewall product, sold as a Proprietary service that sits in front of an application on a content delivery network, a load balancer or an API gateway. Rules decide when a request looks suspicious, by rate, by address reputation or by a condition the operator wrote, and only then does a challenge appear. A Security control of that shape leaves no trace on a request it waves through.

So the number needs a caveat before it needs an interpretation. As of October 2026 we record the challenge on 3,638 sites, and the honest description of that figure is the count of sites that challenged our crawler, not the count of sites protected by the firewall. The deployed base is larger, and the sample tilts towards operators who wrote aggressive rules or who treat unfamiliar user agents as suspect by default.

The tilt is the useful part. A site that challenges a well behaved crawler is telling you something specific about its posture, and a list of such sites is a list of properties where automated access is expected to be difficult. Competing bot mitigation vendors read it as a customer roster for the incumbent. Teams planning data collection read it as a map of where their collectors will stall. Infrastructure researchers read it as a proxy for how far the managed firewall has spread inside the wider cloud estate, since the challenge implies the whole edge stack sitting behind it.

There is another inference worth taking from the same row. A domain serving this challenge is committed to a particular cloud, because the feature does not exist outside it, so the detection doubles as evidence about hosting and vendor concentration. Checking one domain tells you that it is protected today. The export tells you how the protected population spreads across industries and suffixes, and how quickly the control is being adopted from one release of the data to the next.
