Über Strapdown.js
Dokumentation in Markdown zu schreiben und ganz ohne Build-Schritt auszuliefern, war für kurze Zeit eine wirklich verlockende Idee. Man speicherte eine Textdatei, fügte ein einziges Skript-Tag hinzu, und der Browser übernahm die Umwandlung beim Laden. Strapdown.js wurde genau für diese Phase gebaut und erschien 2012, bevor statische Site-Generatoren und Markdown-fähiges Hosting den Trick überflüssig machten.
Die Funktionsweise erklärt, wer die Bibliothek noch einsetzt. Der Inhalt steht als reines Markdown direkt im HTML, JavaScript in der Seite wandelt ihn beim Laden in formatierte Ausgabe um, und nichts wird vorkompiliert. Eine solche Seite ist schnell erstellt, und sie sich selbst zu überlassen, kostet praktisch nichts, weshalb sie meist einmal angelegt und dann vergessen wird. Stand Oktober 2026 erkennen wir Strapdown.js auf 20 Websites, und dieser Bestand konzentriert sich stark auf Projektdokumentation, interne Notizen und einseitige Nachschlageseiten, die seit Jahren niemand mehr anzufassen brauchte.
Die Erkennung hat eine offensichtliche Schwäche, die man benennen sollte. Weil die Bibliothek unter der Lizenz MIT ausgeliefert wird, kostet es nichts, die Datei in ein Projekt zu kopieren und umzubenennen, und ins Projekt übernommene Kopien mit geänderten Dateinamen passen nicht zu unserem Fingerabdruck. Wer den Export nutzt, um clientseitiges Markdown-Rendering als Technik zu untersuchen, sollte unsere Zahl als sichtbaren Ausschnitt behandeln und nicht als die gesamte Praxis.
Für die Recherche ist der Einsatz von Strapdown.js weniger als Technologieentscheidung interessant denn als Zeitstempel. Clientseitiges Markdown-Rendering verschlechtert die Crawlbarkeit, verzögert den ersten Seitenaufbau und fällt komplett aus, wenn der Host des Skripts verschwindet. Eine noch erreichbare Seite, die das weiterhin so macht, ist deshalb meist eine Seite, deren Build-Prozess nie überarbeitet wurde. Teams für Sicherheit und Asset-Inventarisierung lesen das Signal genauso, denn eine ungepflegte Seite lädt oft weitere ungepflegte Dinge mit.
