A extensão genérica .mobi foi criada especificamente para sites otimizados para dispositivos móveis, tendo sido lançada numa altura em que a web móvel exigia conteúdo distinto, adaptado a ecrãs mais pequenos e a largura de banda limitada. Delegada em 2005 e lançada comercialmente em 2006, a .mobi foi concebida como um espaço de nomes que ajudaria os utilizadores a identificar conteúdo compatível com dispositivos móveis e ajudaria os operadores móveis a proporcionar melhores experiências aos seus clientes.
Embora a visão de uma web móvel separada não se tenha concretizado totalmente, uma vez que o design responsivo e o desenvolvimento mobile-first tornaram os domínios específicos para dispositivos menos necessários, a .mobi manteve uma base de registos significativa. É utilizada por empresas focadas em dispositivos móveis, programadores de aplicações e empresas que mantêm portais específicos para telemóvel. A extensão é operada pela Afilias e continua a servir como sinal reconhecido de relevância móvel, mesmo com a web em geral a convergir para experiências unificadas e responsivas.
