Nuestra taxonomía clasifica Totara en la categoría LMS, algo exacto en el sentido acotado de que el software gestiona y publica contenido, y engañoso si la etiqueta le hace imaginar un constructor de sitios web. El contenido del que se trata es formación. Cursos, competencias, registros de finalización y la prueba de que un empleado con nombre y apellidos terminó un módulo obligatorio en una fecha por la que un auditor acabará preguntando.

Totara Learning Solutions distribuye Totara con licencia GPL v3, y la base de código se desarrolla en PHP desde 2010. El acuerdo de licencia es la parte interesante de esa frase. Una licencia abierta aquí no implica una instalación de aficionado, porque el alojamiento, la integración, la configuración y el soporte alrededor de una plataforma de este tamaño se compran normalmente a un socio de implantación, y la organización que paga está comprando una relación de servicio y no descargando un archivo comprimido. Una instalación implica por tanto un presupuesto, un proceso de compras y alguien de dentro responsable del desarrollo del personal.

La combinación hace que la población detectada sea inusualmente homogénea. Empleadores lo bastante grandes como para necesitar formación interna estructurada, universidades y centros de estudios superiores, servicios de salud, departamentos de la administración e industrias reguladas donde acreditar la formación es una obligación legal y no una buena idea. Aparecen muy pocas empresas pequeñas, porque muy pocas empresas pequeñas operan una plataforma de aprendizaje propia.

Los proveedores de herramientas adyacentes, los integradores que buscan trabajo de implantación y migración y los analistas que dimensionan el mercado de la formación corporativa quieren todos el mismo archivo, y cada uno de ellos lo quiere entero. Una consulta dominio a dominio confirma una sola sospecha que ya tenía. La descarga muestra la forma de un sector que de otro modo no podría ver.
