Acerca de Vanilla

Tener una comunidad propia ha pasado de moda. Buena parte de la conversación que antes residía en los foros corporativos se trasladó a los grupos sociales y a los servidores de chat, donde el archivo pertenece a otro y ningún buscador puede indexarlo. Un sitio que sigue usando Vanilla ha decidido no aceptar ese intercambio.

El producto es una plataforma de debate y no un publicador de páginas, algo que nuestra etiqueta genérica Message boards no llega a transmitir. Escrito en PHP y publicado con licencia GPL v2 desde 2009, se puede descargar y ejecutar en un alojamiento que controla el propio cliente, mientras que Vanilla Forums Inc. vende además una edición gestionada para quien quiere lo mismo sin ocuparse de la operación. La distinción importa a la hora de leer nuestras cifras, porque las instalaciones autoalojadas están en el dominio del propio cliente, donde un rastreador puede alcanzarlas, y algunos despliegues gestionados residen en infraestructura del proveedor bajo un nombre de host que nadie asociaría con la marca matriz.

Los despliegues se agrupan en unas pocas formas reconocibles: comunidades de soporte asociadas a productos de software, comunidades de jugadores alrededor de videojuegos, organizaciones con socios y sitios de aficionados lo bastante antiguos como para ser anteriores a las plataformas sociales. Todos comparten un requisito de fondo, que es la moderación a un volumen en el que una lista de correo deja de funcionar y un servidor de chat pierde las respuestas una semana después de haberse dado. Una huella de foro en un dominio comercial es, por tanto, una señal sobre la plantilla tanto como sobre el software, porque hay alguien a quien se paga por moderar.

Para un proveedor que vende en este terreno la lista tiene un uso evidente, porque nadie mantiene un registro de quién ha descargado un paquete y lo ha puesto en marcha. Más allá de desbancar al producto ya instalado, la misma población resulta útil a cualquiera que venda herramientas de moderación, analítica de comunidades, inicio de sesión único o trabajos de migración, y a los investigadores que se preguntan dónde sigue habiendo debate independiente fuera de las grandes plataformas. Ordenar una población de dominios por software de foro, país y dominio de primer nivel responde a eso en una sola pasada, y ningún volumen de comprobaciones de dominios uno a uno producirá jamás la misma imagen.
