Acerca de <model-viewer>

Poner un modelo tridimensional interactivo en una página web exigía antes un desarrollador de gráficos. <model-viewer> lo redujo a un único elemento HTML, y los sitios que adoptan el componente suelen ser los que tienen algo físico que enseñar.

Google publicó el componente web en 2018 con licencia Apache 2.0, y representa recursos glTF y GLB mediante WebGL mientras cede el trabajo al dispositivo para la visualización en realidad aumentada en los teléfonos compatibles. La adopción implica por tanto algo que la detección de un script rara vez implica, que es un flujo de producción detrás de la página. Alguien tuvo que modelar, optimizar y alojar los recursos, y alguien tuvo que decidir que valía la pena representar un catálogo como modelos y no como fotografías. El componente es gratuito y los modelos no.

La población se divide siguiendo ese flujo de producción. Los minoristas usan el visor para muebles, calzado, gafas y electrodomésticos, donde ver un objeto a escala en una habitación real cambia una decisión de compra. Los fabricantes y los proveedores industriales lo usan para equipos y piezas que se entienden mejor girándolos que describiéndolos. Los museos, los arquitectos y los sitios educativos lo usan para objetos que no se pueden fotografiar de forma útil desde un único ángulo. Lo que comparten esos grupos es una biblioteca de recursos ya existente, que es la parte cara y la razón de que la adopción sea desigual entre catálogos por lo demás parecidos.

La detección es sencilla y la salvedad tiene que ver con el alcance más que con la precisión. Reconocemos el módulo de JavaScript y el elemento personalizado en el marcado de una página, así que una página de producto que incluye el visor es fácil de identificar, mientras que un sitio que representa modelos mediante un widget propietario de un proveedor o dentro de una aplicación nativa se cuenta en otro lugar o no se cuenta en absoluto. La lista describe los sitios que tomaron la vía del estándar abierto, no todo el mercado de medios de producto interactivos.

En octubre de 2026 detectamos <model-viewer> en 2651 sitios.
