La mayoría de los equipos de software conoce GitLab como servicio alojado, que es justo el despliegue que un rastreador web no puede ver. Lo que aparece en un análisis de la web pública es el otro tipo de instalación, una instancia autogestionada que alguien dentro de una organización levantó, dotó de un nombre de host y dejó accesible desde fuera de la red corporativa. Cada detección es una afirmación sobre cómo lleva esa organización su ingeniería, no sobre la herramienta.

Autoalojar una plataforma de desarrollo no es una elección trivial. Alguien tiene que operar una aplicación en Ruby con una base de datos, una cola de trabajos, un almacén de objetos y un registro de contenedores detrás, mantener todo el conjunto parcheado y asumir la responsabilidad sobre el código fuente del negocio que hay dentro. Las organizaciones aceptan esa carga por motivos reconocibles: normas de residencia de los datos, una política de seguridad que prohíbe alojar código en terceros, una tradición de instalaciones locales o, sencillamente, una instalación interna anterior al salto a los servicios alojados. Las empresas con una instancia accesible públicamente suelen tener un equipo de plataforma interno, y un equipo de plataforma compra también las herramientas del entorno.

El historial de licencias explica por qué existen siquiera tantas de esas instalaciones. GitLab Inc. publica el núcleo del producto bajo la licencia MIT desde que el proyecto empezó en 2011, así que una empresa puede operar una instancia seria sin entrar nunca en una relación comercial y comprar después los planes de pago para las funciones de cumplimiento y seguridad. Para un investigador esto tiene dos caras. Un nombre de host que responde con la plataforma demuestra que hay autoalojamiento, pero no demuestra que haya suscripción, y las ediciones gratuita y de pago no se distinguen de forma fiable desde fuera.

En octubre de 2026 registramos 1743 sitios que funcionan con la plataforma, y el tamaño de esa población es el argumento para trabajar a partir de una lista y no de consultas una a una. Una comprobación por dominio dice si una empresa que ya conoce se autoaloja. Una lista descargable responde a las preguntas anteriores a esa: qué organizaciones se autoalojan siquiera, cómo se reparten por sectores y países una vez cruzadas con sus propios datos de empresa y cuáles de ellas muestran otra infraestructura autogestionada en el mismo registro.

La detección aquí es inferencial y se queda corta. Las instancias detrás de una VPN, de un proxy con reconocimiento de identidad o de un nombre DNS solo interno nunca entran en un rastreo público, y una organización puede operar la plataforma durante años sin exponernos una sola página. Lo que le da el conjunto de datos es una cota inferior, un conjunto verificado de instalaciones accesibles públicamente con el host en el que se vio cada una y la fecha en que se vio, y eso es un punto de partida mucho mejor que una estimación de mercado.
