I wiki self-hosted erano la soluzione collaborativa predefinita prima che gli strumenti di documentazione in hosting conquistassero il mercato, e alcuni di essi rispondono ancora alle richieste. WikkaWiki è uno di questi sopravvissuti, un piccolo motore PHP rilasciato con licenza GPL v2 nel 2004 e pensato per essere caricato su un hosting condiviso con un database e poi lasciato a sé stesso.
