Il servizio IntenseDebate appartiene a quell’epoca: un widget in hosting che sostituiva qualunque casella dei commenti fornita con la piattaforma di blogging, aggiungendo discussioni annidate, voti e punteggi di reputazione dei lettori, il tutto sui server di qualcun altro. Una verifica per singolo dominio indica se un sito ha l’embed oggi. Il dataset fa ciò che una ricerca, per sua struttura, non può fare: elencare tutti i domini in cui l’embed compare ancora, suddivisi per estensione di dominio e per ciò che vi gira accanto, e poi confrontare le esportazioni nel tempo. Qui l’andamento atteso è il declino, e il declino si può misurare solo se si riesce a contare due volte la stessa popolazione. Un file confrontabile riga per riga trasforma la vaga impressione che un prodotto stia perdendo terreno in un numero da inserire in un piano.
