Acerca de Google Code Prettify

Una biblioteca cuya página de inicio reside en un alojamiento de código que ya no existe dice algo antes incluso de inspeccionar una sola página. Google publicó Google Code Prettify en 2006, cuando Google Code era el lugar donde Google dejaba sus pequeñas publicaciones de código abierto, y el proyecto sobrevivió al servicio que lo alojaba. Las páginas que todavía cargan el script son, casi por definición, páginas que llevan mucho tiempo sin reconstruirse.

La tarea en sí era muy acotada. Los ejemplos de código en la documentación y en las entradas de blog se muestran como texto indiferenciado, así que la biblioteca los analizaba, adivinaba el lenguaje y coloreaba los elementos. Adivinar era el argumento de venta, porque un autor podía pegar un fragmento sin declarar de qué se trataba. Los resaltadores más recientes piden el lenguaje de forma explícita e incluyen muchas más gramáticas, y ese cambio explica en buena parte que Google Code Prettify dejara de elegirse para trabajos nuevos.

En octubre de 2026 detectamos Google Code Prettify en 20 sitios, y lo interesante es qué tipo de sitio resulta ser. El resaltado de sintaxis solo aparece donde aparece código, de modo que la población detectada son portales de documentación, blogs de desarrolladores, manuales de frameworks, páginas de asignaturas universitarias y bases de conocimiento de soporte. Quien busque editores técnicos y no productos técnicos puede usar la etiqueta como aproximación precisamente a eso.

La cifra necesita dos matices. La biblioteca se distribuye con licencia Apache 2.0 y era habitual copiarla directamente dentro de un proyecto en lugar de cargarla desde un alojamiento compartido, así que una copia renombrada o empaquetada dentro de un archivo JavaScript concatenado puede no coincidir con lo que buscamos. La detección tampoco ve las páginas que resaltan el código en el servidor, algo que ya hacen muchos sistemas de documentación, lo que significa que un sitio puede publicar código sin que se vea siquiera un resaltador del lado del cliente.

La presencia se lee mejor como señal de mantenimiento que como preferencia tecnológica. Nadie elige un resaltador descontinuado en octubre de 2026, así que una coincidencia suele apuntar a una plantilla editada por última vez años atrás, a menudo en un subdominio que se cayó del inventario de alguien. Los equipos de seguridad lo tratan como una pista, porque un alojamiento de documentación olvidado suele arrastrar consigo otras cosas olvidadas, y los proveedores de plataformas de documentación lo tratan como objetivo de migración.

La descarga es lo que convierte la señal en trabajo accionable. Un dominio concreto comprobado a mano responde a una sola pregunta. Una exportación completa de los alojamientos detectados le permite ordenar organizaciones según cuántas propiedades de documentación obsoletas mantienen, cruzar el resultado con su propia lista de cuentas y ver la forma de una larga cola que ningún gráfico de cuota de mercado de bibliotecas de resaltado mostraría jamás.
