.open est une extension de domaine générique qui a fait l’objet d’une candidature lors du programme d’expansion des nouveaux gTLD de l’ICANN. Elle était destinée à desservir les communautés et organisations liées à l’ouverture, aux projets open source, aux standards ouverts ou aux initiatives de libre accès. Cependant, cette extension est restée réservée ou d’usage limité, en attendant la résolution de procédures relatives aux marques et à la délégation.

Le concept derrière .open s’inscrit dans la mouvance plus large des mouvements open source et open data, dont l’influence s’est considérablement accrue dans l’industrie technologique. Si l’extension venait à être largement disponible, elle pourrait servir les développeurs, les institutions académiques et les groupes de défense d’intérêts qui promeuvent une connaissance et une technologie transparentes et librement accessibles.
