Pochi marcatori in una pagina sono discreti quanto un servizio di avatar, ed è proprio questa discrezione a renderlo utile. Un sito non adotta Gravatar come adotta un framework. Nella maggior parte dei casi il servizio arriva come comportamento predefinito della piattaforma di pubblicazione sottostante: un modulo per i commenti mostra l’immagine dell’autore calcolando un hash dell’indirizzo email di chi commenta e richiedendo l’immagine a un server remoto, e nessuno decide mai di attivarlo.

Gravatar è un servizio della categoria Miscellaneous, lanciato nel 2007 e di proprietà di Automattic, richiamato dal codice PHP del sito e offerto in hosting con licenza Proprietary. La presenza del marcatore è un indicatore ragionevolmente forte del fatto che la pagina ospita contenuti di qualche tipo generati dagli utenti, il più delle volte commenti, messaggi nei forum o profili d’autore.
