L’editing collaborativo era un problema di ricerca molto prima di diventare una funzione di ogni suite per ufficio, ed Etherpad è uno dei pochi frutti di quei primi lavori ancora in funzione sul web pubblico. L’idea era che più persone potessero scrivere nello stesso documento, da un browser e nello stesso momento, vedendosi a vicenda all’opera, cosa che oggi sembra banale ma che nel 2008 non lo era. Se il software esiste ancora è proprio grazie alla licenza Apache 2.0, perché chiunque può eseguirne una copia senza chiedere il permesso e nessun fornitore è in condizione di ritirarlo.
