It usually says which internet a site belongs to, which advertising ecosystem it buys from and which language its customers speak, and Yandex.Metrika is close to a pure example of that. The tool is made by Yandex, offered as a Proprietary service since 2009, and it exists in tight orbit around the same company's search and advertising products. The numbers show the orbit clearly. As of October 2026 we detect the tag on 191,983 sites, of which 78,594 are attributed to Russia, and .ru leads the domain endings by a wide margin. Regional concentration at that level is unusual in the analytics category, where the common products are spread thinly across every market, and the concentration is the reason the list is worth having as a segment definition in the first place. Feature set explains part of the reach beyond the home market. Session replay, click maps and heat maps come without an extra charge, alongside conventional goal and funnel reporting, so teams outside the region sometimes install the tag purely for qualitative behaviour analysis and keep another analytics product for reporting. Dual installation is normal rather than exceptional, and a site carrying this tag frequently carries a second analytics tag beside it. Reading the presence correctly means being careful about what it does and does not prove. The tag says a site is instrumented for an audience the operator expects to reach through a particular search and advertising ecosystem. The tag does not say where the company is registered, where its staff sit, or where its data ultimately lands, and inferring any of those from a script tag alone is a mistake. Themes, hosting panels and marketplace templates sometimes inject the tag by default, and a site that pivoted markets years ago may still carry the code because nobody removed it. Those caveats accepted, the population answers questions that matter commercially. Analytics and session replay vendors use it to size a competitive base. Companies doing supplier or acquisition screening use it as one input when they need to understand which regional ecosystems a counterparty is wired into. Researchers mapping the shape of a language specific web use it because the tag is one of the more reliable markers of market orientation available from the outside, more reliable than domain ending on its own and far more reliable than page language. A single domain lookup cannot support any of that. Checking one site returns a yes or a no, while every question above is about a population, its composition, its geography and its movement over time.
