WP Engine sits at the premium end of the WordPress Hosting market, founded in 2010 in Austin and sold on staging environments, backups, a global CDN and support rather than on price. The stack underneath is PHP and WordPress, the same as on a commodity shared host, and what the customer is actually buying is operations. As of October 2026 we see the platform serving 476,921 sites. A detection carries an implication that most technology signals do not, which is a stated budget. Nobody lands on a managed plan by accident, and the price gap against ordinary WordPress hosting is wide enough that the choice usually means an agency made it, or a business with real traffic and somebody accountable for uptime. For anyone selling plugins, security services, agency services or software to mid market companies, the hosting field is a strong qualifier in a technology dataset, because it separates sites with a maintenance budget from sites without one. Detection here is inferential and the limits should be stated plainly. The opposite error exists too, because an agency can park an unfinished client project on its own plan, which puts a domain in the list before the business behind it is really a customer. 457,084 of the 476,921 sites we attribute to the platform are registered in United States, with .com leading the domain mix, which matches an American company selling first into its home market. The country figure is best treated as an attribute of the domain rather than the location of the business, because agencies serving international clients register in one market and host everything under a single account. A per-domain lookup tells you who hosts one site, which is a question a support desk asks. An export answers the market question instead: how many sites sit on the platform, which of them run commerce or membership plugins, what they moved away from, and which competitors are gaining or losing that population between one refresh and the next.
