No server access, no plugin installs beyond what the platform permits, no theme uploads on the lower tiers, no database. Vendors who buy website technology data in order to find prospects for hosting, security tooling or plugin licences should treat a hit here as a disqualification rather than a lead, and the ability to remove a whole class of domains cleanly is worth as much per row as the ability to find one. As of October 2026 we record 1,074,173 domains on the platform, filed under PaaS. Detection is unusually solid compared with most fields in our index, because a platform hosted site resolves into the platform's own infrastructure and serves markup its own build system produced. Little inference is involved. The genuinely ambiguous cases are domains using the platform for part of a property and something else for the rest, which a single row cannot express. Geography deserves a blunt warning on this record. Our attribution places 1,060,762 of 1,074,173 domains in United States, a figure that should stop anyone reading the column as audience data. Country in our dataset follows where a domain and its infrastructure resolve, and every site on a centrally hosted platform resolves into that platform's data centres regardless of where its owner sits or its readers live. On a self hosted technology the country field carries real signal. On a hosted platform the field mostly reports the platform's own address. What a hit does tell you is a decision about ownership. Somebody chose managed convenience over control, which correlates with a small team, no in house developer, and a willingness to pay a subscription rather than assemble parts. Automattic has run the platform since 2005 on a Proprietary basis, and the free tier at the bottom of the range means this population mixes paying customers with abandoned experiments in a way no external signal separates cleanly. A custom domain is the closest available proxy for somebody having paid something, because the free tier does not come with one. Confusion between the hosted platform and the self hosted software it descends from is a common and expensive error in bought technology data. A campaign aimed at owners of the open source version will waste a large share of its budget on domains that cannot install what it is selling, and the two look alike in a page level scan because they render through much the same machinery. Separating them is exactly the kind of task that needs the whole population in a file. Which domains sit on the platform. Which of those carry a custom domain. Which migrated off between two crawls, a moment that reliably marks a site outgrowing managed hosting and turning into a real prospect for everyone who was correctly ignoring it before.
