The editor arrives bundled inside something else: a content management system, an ecommerce back office, a learning platform, a ticketing tool, an internal application written years ago. What this list really contains is a record of the applications that embedded the editor and happened to expose it on a public page. Tiny Technologies has maintained it since 2004, written in JavaScript, with our licence field reading GPL v2, and available both self hosted and as a cloud service. The function is narrow and old: turn a text box into something that behaves like a word processor, and produce markup from whatever the user typed. Longevity explains the reach. Replacing an editor is invasive work, so applications tend to keep the one they shipped with, and the component outlives several redesigns of the software around it. The detection caveat here is larger than usual and points in a known direction. An editor mostly loads on authoring screens, and authoring screens sit behind a login. A crawler sees the public web, so what gets captured is the subset of instances exposed without authentication: comment forms, contact and support widgets, public submission pages, review boxes. As of October 2026 we record the editor on 76,227 sites, while a substantial population of administration only installations stays invisible by construction. The figure is a floor, and the sample leans toward public facing deployments. The public instances are the interesting ones in any case. A rich text editor is the component that accepts untrusted input and turns it into markup, which makes an unauthenticated instance a meaningful part of a site's attack surface. Security researchers want that population specifically, and a domain by domain check cannot produce it. United States accounts for 29,981 of the detections and .com leads the suffix distribution. Age shapes the reading too: a product in circulation since 2004 accumulates a long tail of legacy applications, and older installations are rarely revisited once they work. For companies selling editors, the buyer is the application vendor rather than the individual site, so the list functions as a map of which products embedded which component and how far those products spread.
