a finished page, because their job is to dissolve into class names. Stitches is a clean example of the problem. The library generates atomic CSS during the build and ships close to nothing to the browser at runtime, so what remains is a naming pattern inside a stylesheet rather than a script anyone can point at. Stitches arrived in 2020, written in TypeScript at Modulz as the styling layer beneath the Radix component set, at the moment when the argument about CSS in JavaScript was turning from developer comfort toward runtime cost. The design answered that criticism directly, with variants, theming through CSS variables, and class names resolved before deployment. WorkOS later acquired the team. The library remains MIT licensed, which means the code stays usable no matter how much attention its owner gives it, and that matters when reading adoption figures for anything whose development has slowed. Finding Stitches on a site says something fairly specific about the team that built it. A React front end, a design system built on tokens and variants rather than ad hoc styles, TypeScript somewhere in the toolchain, and a build step running before deploy are all implied.
