Statcounter demonstrates the point. A StatCounter service dating to 2000, it predates most of what marketers now think of as web analytics, and it survives on a lot of sites for the same reason an old visitor counter survives: nobody with the access to remove it is still looking at the page. Presence of the snippet implies a particular kind of owner. The service is Freemium, so the bulk of installations never involved a purchase decision, and the free tier historically kept only a shallow window of visitor history. Sites relying on it are usually run by one person or a small business, are old enough to have been built before analytics consolidated around a single default, and frequently carry a newer tracker alongside. Finding this tag together with a modern analytics script on the same domain is good evidence of a site that was relaunched without ever being cleaned up. As of October 2026 the tag is present on 111,944 sites, with United States contributing 66,540 and .com leading the domain distribution. The spread is wide rather than deep, which is what a Analytics tool with a free tier produces: many small domains, few large ones, and no strong industry concentration. Country share here mostly reflects where the web has the longest tail of small independent sites. Detection is a straightforward match on the tracking snippet, so it is reliable about what sits on the page and silent about whether anyone reads the reports. We hold no version data for Statcounter, because the hosted script updates itself and carries no readable version marker, so the dataset cannot separate an account somebody checks every week from a tag left running since a redesign nobody remembers.
