## About Spring

### At a glance

- **Language:** Java

- **License:** Apache 2.0

- **First release:** 2002-10-01

Every count on this page begins with a mistake. The framework runs on the server, where a crawler has no business seeing it, so Spring becomes visible only when a deployment leaks something it should not have, and that single fact should shape how you read every number below.

Spring is a Java application framework used to build the server behind a site: dependency injection, transaction management, security, data access and the web layer that turns a request into a response. Nothing about it is required to appear in the browser. A well configured deployment sends back HTML that looks the same whether the code behind it is Java, Go or PHP, so the framework stays invisible unless something leaks.

What leaks is what we detect. Default error pages, framework specific cookie and session names, characteristic header values, management endpoints left exposed, and asset paths from starter templates all point at the framework without naming it. Detection built on those signals is inferential and works in one direction only. When we see the signature the site is almost certainly running the framework, but the absence of a signature proves nothing at all, because competently operated deployments are exactly the ones that leak least.

As of October 2026 we identify Spring on 2,131 sites. The honest reading of that figure is that it counts detectable deployments, not deployments. The installed base of a Java framework of this vintage is far larger and sits behind login pages, internal corporate systems, banking and insurance back ends, and APIs that never serve a public HTML page to a crawler in the first place. Anyone using the count as a market share estimate against browser visible technologies is comparing two different kinds of measurement.

The list is still valuable when read correctly, and its value comes from the leak rather than in spite of it. Broadcom stewards the project, which has been Apache 2.0 licensed since 2002, and its user base skews heavily enterprise. A public facing site that exposes the framework fingerprint is therefore a strong indicator of an internal Java engineering team, a self managed or on premise deployment, and a technology budget of a particular shape. Vendors selling application performance monitoring, Java tooling, build and CI systems, container platforms and developer hiring all treat that as a qualifying signal.

Security teams read the same population the other way around. An exposed framework fingerprint is a configuration finding in itself, and the endpoints that reveal it are frequently endpoints that should never have been public. Measuring that exposure across an industry or a country, rather than one host at a time, is only possible from a full extract.

A per-domain lookup can tell you what one server chose to disclose. The file tells you which organizations disclose it, where they cluster by country and top level domain, and what that says about how enterprise stacks are actually deployed on the public internet.

## Frequently asked questions

How many websites use Spring?
webatla detects Spring on 2K websites, refreshed daily, each with its domain, DNS, WHOIS, IP, country and ranking.

Can I download the list of websites using Spring?
Yes, as structured JSONL. Grab a free sample first.

What's included for each site, and how fresh is it?
Domain, DNS, RDAP/WHOIS, the full technology stack, IP & country, PageRank and Harmonic, re-detected and re-exported daily.

How do I find the websites using Spring?
Buy the technology dataset, then download the complete list of domains we detect using Spring, re-exported every day.

What else is in the Spring technology data?
Each row places Spring next to the other technology on the same site, plus DNS, WHOIS, IP, country and ranking.

Can I download just the sites using Spring, or the whole database?
Both. Every site running Spring comes in the Technologies dataset, one downloadable file. Or buy All data for the entire database: technologies plus identity, ranking, DNS and RDAP/WHOIS for every domain, combined in one file. Daily fresh export.

How do I download the list of websites using Spring?
Three steps: (1) grab the free 10,000-row sample to inspect the schema, (2) buy the Technologies dataset, (3) download the full list of every domain we detect running Spring as a JSON Lines file. It is re-exported daily, so you can re-download the freshest list any time inside your access window. Each row carries the domain plus DNS, WHOIS, IP, hosting country and rank.
