A few tell you when a site stopped. script.aculo.us is a JavaScript JavaScript libraries released in 2005, built on the Prototype framework to supply the visual effects, drag and drop and Ajax helpers that browsers of that era did not offer natively. As of October 2026 we still detect it on 59,209 sites. The library has been superseded twice over, first by jQuery and then by native browser APIs and modern frameworks, and nobody is starting a project with it today. A page that loads it now is almost always a page whose front end has not been rebuilt since the era the library belongs to. Presence is therefore a proxy for something a crawler cannot measure directly, which is maintenance. A site still shipping this library is likely to have an old server stack behind it, an unsupported application, or a bespoke build whose original developer left years ago. For a security researcher the correlation is the whole point, because the library itself is rarely the vulnerability and is a fairly reliable marker for the neglected environment around it. Three groups want a list like this for opposite reasons. Agencies and platform vendors treat it as a rebuild pipeline, since a site running that generation of JavaScript belongs to an owner who has been postponing a decision for a long time. Security teams treat it as an exposure map across suppliers, subsidiaries and acquisitions, where nobody has an inventory of what the acquired websites actually run. Researchers studying how the web ages treat it as a sample of pages frozen at a known point, which is unusually hard to construct any other way. United States carries 15,817 of what remains and .com is the recurring suffix, reflecting where the web was being built when the library was current rather than any present day pattern. The MIT license means the code was copied into countless projects without any record being kept anywhere, so the surviving population is visible only from the outside, on the pages that still serve it.
