Audio playback of page content usually arrives because someone in procurement, in legal, or in a communications office asked for it, and ReadSpeaker has been selling into exactly that conversation since 1999. Sold by ReadSpeaker as a hosted service on a Proprietary basis, the product drops a small JavaScript player into the page template and streams synthesized audio back from the vendor's own engines. Presence of the player therefore says less about a site's stack than about the organization standing behind the site. Organizations that end up with it cluster in recognizable places. Universities and school districts, national and municipal portals, health and benefits information, membership bodies, and publishers serving readers with dyslexia or low vision. In each case a budget line existed, somebody signed a contract and renewed it, and the widget went into the shared template rather than onto a single page. As of October 2026 we record the player on 4,533 sites, which is a count of live embeds rather than a count of contracts. Distinction between those two numbers matters for anyone using the list commercially. ReadSpeaker also sells offline, embedded, and enterprise speech products that never touch a public page, so a substantial customer can be entirely invisible to a crawler. In the other direction, a page can keep loading the player long after a licence lapsed, or expose it only in a section that was never crawled deeply.
