What reaches the page is the residue of a job that finished before the page was served. Created in 2006 and released under the BSD license, Pygments is a Python library that turns source code into marked up, class-annotated output. The library runs at build time or on the server, inside documentation generators, static site builders, wikis, code review tools and package indexes. What ships to the browser is plain markup plus a stylesheet, so what we detect is the vocabulary of class names the library emits rather than a script executing on the page. The inference is about the toolchain rather than about the page. A site carrying that markup was almost certainly built by a documentation pipeline in the Python ecosystem, which in turn says something about the organization behind it. A site like that publishes technical material, has developers writing it, and is generated from source rather than edited in a visual editor. Developer tool vendors, technical recruiters, API companies and anyone selling into engineering teams are looking for exactly that population, and it is hard to find another way, because a docs portal rarely announces itself in a company's marketing. Two limits deserve stating plainly. The class vocabulary was adopted by other highlighters, including compatible implementations written for other languages, so some matches are pages styled to look like Pygments output without the library ever being installed. In the other direction, projects that rename or prefix the generated classes, or that inline a custom theme, drop out of detection entirely. As of October 2026 we record 13,541 sites, and the honest description of the figure is that it counts pages bearing a class convention rather than confirmed installations. For a per-domain question the caveat matters, because a single match can be a false positive. For a population question it barely matters at all. A list of sites that publish highlighted source code is a map of where technical documentation lives on the web, and it holds up as a sample even when individual rows are imperfect.
