A page that colours code blocks is a page that publishes code, and that narrows the population sharply. Prism is a Miscellaneous written in JavaScript, released in 2012 under the MIT license, that turns a plain block of source into readable coloured output in the browser. Prism is small, carries no dependencies, and drops into a template with one stylesheet and one script, which is how it ended up inside so many documentation themes and static site generators. As of October 2026 we detect Prism on 29,815 sites. United States accounts for 11,137 of them, with .com as the common suffix. The suffix is quietly informative, because developer documentation tends to live on a company domain rather than on a national one, which already tells you the sites in this set are attached to products. The useful reading is what presence implies about the site rather than about the code. A domain running Prism is publishing an API reference, an engineering blog, a tutorial series, a developer portal, or product documentation written for people who will paste the examples straight into a terminal. Anyone selling to developers wants that audience, and so does anyone selling documentation tooling, code sandboxes, API management, or technical writing services. The signal is unusual because it is behavioural rather than declarative: a company does not have to say it has a developer audience for the highlighter in its templates to give it away. Two limits apply. The library often arrives inside a theme or a generator preset rather than through a deliberate choice, so presence identifies the publishing stack as much as the publisher.
