Front-end teams choose a component library, a design system, or a styling framework, and the positioning engine arrives inside it. Detecting the library on a page is therefore closer to reading a dependency manifest than to reading a technology decision, and the value of the signal comes from what it implies about everything bundled around it. Popper is a Miscellaneous published under the MIT license and available since 2016. The job it does is narrow. Given a reference element and a floating element, a tooltip, a dropdown, a menu, the library works out where the floating part should sit and what should happen when the viewport runs out of room. Narrow scope is why it ended up embedded inside widely used component frameworks instead of competing with them. Version data is where this footprint gets interesting. We currently track 128 distinct versions in the wild, and the release we record most frequently is 1.14.7. A first-generation release holding that position, on a library whose second generation has been available for years, is not evidence that developers prefer it. Version pinning here is inherited. A site runs whatever release its framework vendored at the moment the theme, the template, or the last serious front-end refresh was built. Seen that way, the version field becomes a dating tool. A page carrying an old release is a page whose front-end stack has not been rebuilt since that release was current, and the same reasoning extends to every other library in the same bundle. For anyone selling front-end tooling, performance work, accessibility remediation, or a design system migration, a stale positioning library is a cheap and surprisingly reliable indicator of a codebase nobody has touched in a long time. As of October 2026 we detect the library on 1,612,710 sites, 602,316 of them in United States, with .com common across the set. Geography for a bundled dependency mostly restates the geography of the frameworks that carry it, so a country breakdown here is weaker evidence about developer preference than it appears. Version distribution and co-occurrence with other libraries are the fields that actually carry information. Detection depends on the library being served as an identifiable file or exposing an identifiable global name, and modern build pipelines work against both. Bundled, minified, tree-shaken code loses the filename and often the version string, so our figure undercounts real usage, and the undercount falls hardest on sites with the newest toolchains, which is the opposite of a random error. Anyone reasoning about adoption trends from this footprint needs to hold that bias in mind, because the sites easiest to detect are systematically the oldest. A per-domain lookup cannot help with any of this, because every question worth asking here is comparative. Which release runs where, how the version spread differs by country, by domain ending, and by content management system, which component frameworks travel with which versions, and how the whole distribution shifts between one export and the next are all questions about a population.
