Nothing in a page announces it. Detection works through inference instead: error output that leaks a driver signature, admin tooling left reachable, headers added by a stack that only ships with one database, and platform fingerprints that imply it because the platform has never shipped anything else. That indirection is worth stating up front, because it sets the correct confidence level. Presence is good evidence. Absence is weak evidence, because a correctly configured stack reveals nothing. Read with that caveat, the number is still one of the most useful in the index, because the database is the layer that determines what a site can do rather than how it looks. Sites that share a database engine tend to share a hosting tier, a price band and a set of operational habits, and those correlations survive changes in theme, framework and front-end fashion that would break any inference built on the presentation layer. The commercial reading follows from that. Hosting and managed service providers use this population to size migration campaigns. Security teams use it to scope which advisories touch a given estate. Anyone selling database tooling, backup services or performance work uses it to find the properties where the problem they solve actually exists. Geographically United States accounts for 10,241,494 of the sites we associate with it, and the .com zone leads. Distributions of that kind track where volume hosting is concentrated rather than any regional preference for one engine over another. Because we publish every detection on a domain together, the database signal becomes considerably sharper in combination than alone. The same engine underneath a content platform, an ecommerce platform or a custom application describes three completely different customers, and separating them requires the rest of the stack on the same row rather than a series of separate lookups. There is also a negative query worth naming, because it is the one most often overlooked. Knowing which sites in a segment do not show this engine, and what they show instead, is how you size a competitive displacement rather than a renewal. That question is only expressible against a full population, since it depends on the absence of a value rather than its presence. Filtering happens on your machine, which means the exploratory passes that make a segment worth targeting cost nothing beyond the download. Where the inference leaves us is a population skewed toward the commodity end of the hosting market, because that is where platforms are standardised and configurations are left at their defaults. Bespoke applications on managed infrastructure are systematically underrepresented, and no amount of crawling fixes that. The right response is to say so rather than to present the visible half as the whole. Oracle Corporation owns it and distributes it under the GPL v2.
