Released in 2001, it belongs to the generation of publishing tools that predates the modern content management market, and it was written in Perl at a time when that was a normal choice for serious web software. Very little of the live web runs on software of that vintage that is still maintained and still sold. The architecture explains the survival. Movable Type publishes static HTML files instead of assembling each page on request, so a site can be neglected, overloaded or left unpatched and still keep serving. The trade is that the running system is close to invisible from outside. A rendered page carries no engine banner, and identification leans on template conventions, asset paths and comment or search endpoints that an administrator is free to rename. Detection here is inferential and it undercounts, in a way that does not apply to database-backed platforms which announce themselves in generated markup. Ownership tells the rest of the story. The software is distributed under GPL v2 and stewardship now sits with Infocom Corporation, a Japanese company, and the platform's continued commercial life is largely a Japanese story, with corporate and media publishers there still buying supported editions while English-language blogging moved elsewhere. Whether that reputation holds across the whole detected population is a question for evidence rather than for received wisdom, and the country and domain ending columns in the download are where it gets settled.
