Sending mail is a server-side job, and the call that hands a receipt or a password reset to a provider happens between two machines with no browser involved. Everything a public page can reveal about the relationship is indirect, and being clear about that is worth more here than a confident number. The traces we can work with are the ones a domain publishes about itself. Records that authorize a provider to send on the domain behalf, tracking and click-wrapping hostnames that appear inside content, form endpoints, unsubscribe links, address validation running on a signup form. Each of those is evidence that a relationship exists or existed. None of them is proof of current sending volume, and a domain can carry authorization records for a provider it stopped paying months ago. The count that results is a floor, and the bias runs in a direction worth naming. Sites that do something visible with the service are overrepresented. Pure back-end use is underrepresented, the archetype being a software product that sends only transactional mail to signed-in users and never mentions its provider anywhere a crawler can reach. A company can be a substantial customer and leave almost no public trace, which means absence from this list proves very little while presence is fairly reliable. What presence does imply is a specific kind of company. The category label on this page reads Email, and the label understates the case, because this is developer-chosen infrastructure reached through an API rather than a campaign tool with a template gallery. A domain associated with it usually has an application behind it, user accounts, and flows that generate mail as a side effect of somebody doing something. Qualifying a company that way is a different exercise from finding businesses that send newsletters, and for anyone selling to engineering teams it is the more useful of the two. Ownership is part of the picture as well. Started in 2010 and now operated by Sinch under Proprietary terms, the service brought its installed base through an acquisition, so the domains in this list are accounts of a parent company that also sells other communication channels.
