Liferay is installed to be that front door, an intranet, a customer or member area, a dealer network, a claims or permits interface, and once it holds that position it tends to stay for a decade or longer, because replacing it means rebuilding every integration with the systems behind it. Longevity is visible in our data. Across the sites that expose a build we distinguish 60 distinct releases, which is a wide spread for one platform, and the release we record most often is 6.2. A spread that wide is the signature of software deployed on the customer's own infrastructure, upgraded on the customer's own budget cycle, and frequently frozen once a set of custom portlets and integrations has been certified against a particular line. For anyone selling into large organisations, the version field is the part of the record worth paying for. A portal several release lines behind current is a migration opportunity for an integration partner, a support conversation for a hosting provider, and, for security researchers, a population worth watching whenever a portal vulnerability is disclosed. Knowing which organisations run the platform matters less than knowing which of them run builds their vendor no longer patches. The platform is LGPL licensed and written in Java, which explains both its adoption pattern and the limits of detecting it. Open licensing means universities, agencies, hospitals and companies can run it with no commercial relationship with Liferay Inc. at all, so an install is not a customer record and should never be read as one. A Java stack also means the portal normally sits behind a reverse proxy, and administrators can strip version headers, rename static paths and reskin the interface until very little of the stock fingerprint survives.
