The library appeared in 2012, while the argument about how a browser should keep a template and a data model in sync was still open, and it answered with observable objects, two way binding and a template syntax extending the rendering library it grew out of. Angular and React later won that argument in public, and the libraries solving the same problem quietly kept running on the pages that already used them. The version data says the rest. We can separate 7 releases across the sites where the file is identifiable, and 1.0.1 accounts for more of them than any other, which is the profile of a library that reached a stable point and stopped. Nobody upgrades a dependency that is neither moving nor broken, so version is not a maintenance signal here. Version is an age signal, marking roughly when the page around the file was last rebuilt. The MIT terms explain how it got there, because a permissively licensed file gets vendored into a project, committed and forgotten, and it travels with internal tools, admin panels, line of business applications and vendor products installed once and never revisited. The population leans towards long lived JavaScript code inside organisations rather than towards public facing marketing pages. For a researcher measuring how long front end dependencies actually survive, a set like that is raw material. For a security team it is a starting inventory of pages carrying a dependency nobody in the building remembers adding. The caveats are the ordinary ones for a library detected by file signature and global object name. Bundlers erase the evidence, so applications that compiled the library into a single file are missing from our count, which makes the number a floor and a badly conservative one for exactly the enterprise builds most likely to use it. The whole set tells you where the remaining installations are, what versions they are frozen at, which top level domains and hosts they cluster around, and how fast the cohort shrinks between releases.
