The choice is made once, usually by an engineering team standing up an application server such as Tomcat, JBoss or WebSphere, and then it stays in place for as long as the application does. Nobody swaps a servlet layer the way they swap a plugin. The technology is therefore a marker of a particular kind of organization: one with in house Java developers, a release process, and an application that predates the current fashion in web stacks. Java Servlet arrived in 1997, when server side web programming still largely meant CGI scripts, and it became the layer that later Java web frameworks were built on top of. Stewardship has since moved to the Eclipse Foundation, which publishes it under Apache 2.0 as part of the Jakarta family. The rename matters to anyone assembling a list, because deployments in the field still identify themselves under both the old and the new naming, and a detector that knows only one of them will quietly miss part of the estate. Detection is inferential either way. A servlet layer rarely announces itself in a page body. What we read instead are container signatures, session cookie names, error page fingerprints and the URL patterns a servlet container leaves behind. A site sitting behind a reverse proxy or a CDN that strips those signals will not be counted at all, so the figure is a floor rather than a census. Security researchers need the inverse: a standing inventory of hosts running a container layer whose weaknesses are container wide rather than site specific. A per domain lookup serves neither. Checking one site tells you what that site runs.
