Launched in 2006 as an Analytics service built around counters, hit maps and simple traffic reports, it asked nothing of a site owner beyond pasting a snippet, and it charged nothing at the entry tier. The result is a population that looks nothing like the one an enterprise analytics product produces: personal sites, forums, local business pages, blogs maintained by their authors, and a long tail of pages built when a visible hit count was a feature rather than a relic. The Freemium model is the thing to hold on to when reading this list. A free tier means adoption was never gated by budget, which is why the base is broad and shallow. A site here has not necessarily bought anything, has not necessarily made a considered analytics decision, and may well be carrying the snippet because it came with the template. Anyone using the list as a buying signal for an analytics product should read it as a signal that the site measures traffic at all, which is a lower bar than a signal of spend. Detection itself is straightforward, since the tracker is a client side snippet visible in the delivered page.
