Nobody picks a website because of it and no budget is attached to it. The value in this dataset is what its presence implies about the page around it, because a site that needs syntax highlighting is a site that publishes code, and sites that publish code are a recognisable population. The library appeared in 2006 and is maintained by a community rather than a company, which explains part of the shape of the data. There is no sales motion pushing it into a particular market, and no licence check gating its use, since it carries a BSD licence and loads from a public delivery network in a single line. Adoption spreads by copy and paste from documentation and tutorials, and the resulting distribution is unusually even across countries compared with the commercial tools in this dataset. As of October 2026 the library is detected on 90,505 sites. United States accounts for 30,353 of them, a smaller share of the whole than paid tooling usually shows, and .com remains the common suffix. The flatter geography is itself the finding, because documentation, technical blogs, developer tools and API references exist wherever developers do, and developers are not concentrated only in the markets where software gets sold. Version reporting is coarse for a library distributed this way. We record 8 distinct values, with 3 the value most pages expose, but what a page exposes is often a major line rather than a precise build, so the version column separates old installs from current ones and should not be treated as a patch-level inventory. A stale copy still matters, because a highlighting library parses untrusted text and libraries in that position collect advisories over a long enough life. The practical use is as a filter rather than as a target in itself. Combined with the rest of a domain's fingerprint, the library helps isolate the technical web: companies with public developer documentation, open source projects with real project pages, vendors that publish an API and therefore sell to engineers.
