Hexo runs on a developer's machine or inside a build pipeline. The server that answers a request for the finished page knows nothing about it, because what reaches the browser is plain HTML. Detection depends instead on the traces the generator leaves behind, usually a generator tag in the head, a predictable asset layout, or theme markup that ships with a default install. The constraint shapes the number. As of October 2026 we record Hexo on 22,940 sites, each of them a site where the build tooling stayed visible. A publisher who strips the generator tag or rewrites the theme drops out of the list entirely, so the figure is a floor rather than an estimate. Anyone modelling the static site market should treat undercounting as the normal condition, not an occasional flaw. Hexo appeared in 2012 and is written in JavaScript, which places it in the wave of Node.js build tools that followed the Ruby generators of the previous decade. The licence is MIT, so no install implies a purchase, a renewal or a vendor account. A site built this way reflects a technical decision made by someone comfortable at a command line, not a customer relationship with anybody. Commercially that reframes the audience. These are not buyers of the generator, they are buyers of everything a static site cannot do on its own, from forms and comments to search, image hosting and deployment.
