A site does not adopt Gravatar the way it adopts a framework. In most cases the service arrives as a default behaviour of the publishing platform underneath: a comment form renders an author picture by hashing the commenter's email address and requesting the image from a remote server, and nobody ever decides to switch it on. Gravatar is a Miscellaneous service launched in 2007 and owned by Automattic, called from PHP code on the site and delivered as a Proprietary hosted service. Presence of the marker is a reasonably strong indicator that the page carries user generated content of some kind, most often comments, forum posts or author profiles. A site with an avatar service is a site with an audience it lets speak, which separates it from the far larger population of purely published pages. The privacy consequence is the reason many researchers want this list. Every avatar request leaves the site and reaches infrastructure the operator does not control, carrying a hash derived from a real email address and the visitor's address and browser headers along with it. Consent tooling frequently misses the request because it looks like an image rather than a tracker. For anyone auditing third party data flows, selling consent management, or studying how ordinary sites leak identifiers without intending to, a full list of sites making that request is the starting point rather than the conclusion. As of October 2026 we detect Gravatar on 383,856 sites, with 211,065 of them in United States and the largest single block sitting on .com. The distribution mostly follows the distribution of the blogging and forum software that calls the service by default, so the country column here describes where a publishing ecosystem is popular rather than where the avatar service was chosen. We hold no version information for this technology, because a hosted service exposes nothing from the outside that identifies a release. A researcher can ask which sites make the request, on which suffix and in which country, but not which build answers it. Detection is inferential in the other direction too: the marker only appears on pages that actually render an avatar, so a site that uses the service exclusively behind a login or on pages our crawl never reached is missing from the count.
